Hip Pain Reasons: When Should Women Be Warned?

Women aged over 35 are more likely to experience chronic joint pain than men belonging to the same age group. This is applicable to all kinds of joints, whether it involves either of the leg, knee, spine, or hip.

This is evident from the fact that more younger women are now advised to undergo hip replacement that men, in an age when they should be considered healthy. A few years ago, hip replacement was considered a massive surgery conducted on a patient who has had their hip bone broken because of an injury from a fall or an accident. But the trend has now shifted to include more younger women.

There are a number of reasons for hip pain in women, which, if left untreated over a period of time, may warrant the need for a hip replacement. But it is more important for women to identify the underlying reasons for hip pain and get medical treatment as soon as possible to prevent it from worsening.

Here are some of the reasons for hip pain in women

Osteoarthritis of the hip: Arthritis of the bones and the breakdown of the tissues surrounding the bones is far more common in women than in men. The two main joints affected by osteoarthritis are that of knees and hip.

Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for hip pain in women. The pain and inflammation in the case of hip results due to wear and tear of the hip ball and socket joint. The pain in case of arthritis of the hip is felt in the groin region and the front portion of the thigh. This pain in often because of the swelling and inflammation of the hip joint.

Bursitis: Bursae refers to the fluid filled sacs in the hips that protect the hip bone close to the outer surface. However, due to overuse or irritation, the bursae can become inflamed and result in pain whenever the affected individual tries to move the hip joint. This condition, called bursitis, is more common in women than in males.

Tendinitis: Small collagen and elastic tissue called tendon connects the hip muscle to the hip joint.  The tendon may sometimes get inflamed because of overwork, leading to pain whenever the hip bone moves. Iliotibial band syndrome is one reason behind tendinitis in women, which mostly results in athletes who run, jog, or cycle over a long distance.

Piriformis Syndrome: This is yet another condition that may result in dull ache in the hip and the back of the leg. This condition, often confused with scatica, results when piriformis muscle press against the sciatic nerve, which leaves the spine and enters the scaitic groove located under the piriformis muscle. The muscle presses the nerve only when it is tight, which most commonly happens in women than men.

Uncontrolled Weight: Women are more likely to gain fat around the abdomen, hip and thighs portion. This is still okay for women with normal weight and body mass index (BMI). But with overweight women, accumulation of extra fat around the waist, lower abdomen and hip can put an extra pressure on the hip joint and knees, resulting in pain. Losing weight is the most effective treatment in case of hip pain caused due to weight.

Hernia: Different types of hernia, including inguinal, femoral and hernia of the groin can result in hip pain as well. Hernia most often causes frontal hip pain in women. Pregnant women are more likely to develop hip pain because of formation of inguinal hernia because of added pressure in the abdomen.

Endometriosis: This condition may lead to tenderness in the pelvis, which is often referred to as reason for hip pain in women. Endometriosis results when the lining of the uterus grows considerable and reaches other places as well.
