MCI is a common phenomenon in the older ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Such individuals seem to lose their grip on their memories and are even unable to answer simplest questions such as what is their favourite food, how many members do they have in their family and what did they do for a living.
However, it is very much possible to avoid cognitive impairment with the help of some simple techniques. This is what a research, conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers, suggest.
According to the study published in the journal JAMA Neurology, aged ones who indulge themselves in mentally stimulating exercises end up reducing their risk of MCI, as compared to those who do not indulge in such activities. However, this effects becomes more pronounced only after 4 years of continuous exercise.
The study based their findings on an analysis of nearly 2,000 elderly who has an average age of 77. They were initially screened for not having cognitive impairment at the start of the study and were asked if they indulged in activities such as social gatherings, art and craft and gaming.
They were again scrutinized for their cognitive abilities at regular intervals. It was realized that people who participated in such activities were less likely to suffer from MCI than others who did not.
This is not the only study to suggest these kind of results. Several studies conducted in the past have also proved the same. Brain stimulating exercises, thus, help keep brain sharper and prevent cognitive decline in the elderly.
